Intuitive Outfits?!

Since high school, I've gotten comments regarding my outfits i.e. "Kira, I have to have your closet", "can you be my personal shopper?", "your clothes..." (as she said in awe of particular boots I chose that day) and things of that nature and although I loved the compliments, I didn't think much of my outfits and their impact on other people until very recently. I've always chosen outfits that made me feel like I looked my best and sometimes that style was outlandish and unique but it has always been mine. In a way it was a mind trick, if you feel like you look your best, others will receive that energy about you as well.

We've all heard of intuitive eating but what is intuitive dressing? For me, intuitive dressing (or outfits) take place when I am getting ready for the day- or night- and really figuring out what I know I will feel and look my best in. Have you ever worn an outfit that you were iffy about and the entire time you were self-conscious and didn't get any compliments on your outfit which made your insecurities even worse? Exactly. Hence the aforementioned mind trick. But back to the intuitive side of things, sometimes this might take a while of mismatching, thinking about and rearranging clothes until you find one that works. Trust me, the patience is worth the outcome of feeling your best.

But intuitive dressing doesn't just stop there. It continues with your outfit "accents" such as jewelry, shoes, accessories, bags and even makeup! For example, if I am wearing an all black outfit, down to the shoes (almost always a crowd pleaser) I try to make it pop with jewelry, a colorful bag or even a red lip (if all else fails, getting a sweater or long sleeve of some kind to tie around your waist gives you color and accentuates your body's natural shape). Using the right accessories requires just as much as your intuition as the actual outfit- you'll know when to stop with the makeup, jewelry etc. And then, before you know it, all of these things come together in an amazing outfit that you look and feel your best in and that's what this comes down to: what you feel your best in, not what anyone else thinks.

When I have a lot of neutrals (black and jeans) I throw in a colorful purse for some fun! And I add some statement jewelry).

*Things to keep in mind when intuitive dressing:

  • An outfit that has worked before (or multiple times before) can stop working or not work for a particular day... this is normal! Use it as an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone.

  • Intuitive dressing doesn't have to only include fancy outfits. At-home, lazy outfits can benefit from intuition too (remember, it's about what you feel).

  • There are no rules! If you like how you look and feel, even if it is unconventional, you own it!
