If you've been on social media for years, you've seen all the photos. You know which ones I'm talking about- the ones with all of the bright white, deep blue and clear water. It seems like every year all I saw on my feed was pictures of people traveling to Greece and it was finally my turn!

It goes without saying but Greece was beautiful. The thing is there are so many islands to see you'd need weeks or to go back (which is part of my plan) but here are some dos and don'ts for Greece:

General Greece travel tips:

  • DO pack comfortable shoes (you'll be walking a lot)

  • DO bring extra sunscreen (Oh yeah, Greece is HOT)

  • DON'T be in a rush; to walk, get places, get your food etc. Slow down and enjoy the scenery. Absorb it all. There's no rush!

  • DO visit any other islands you can. We took a ferry from Athens to Aegina (which prior to researching for this trip, I had never heard of but nonetheless it was worth it and so beautiful). The travel via ferry is great and inexpensive depending on where you're going.

  • DO plan to spend multiple days on each island, one day is not suitable to see enough unless it is a smaller island.

  • DON'T be afraid to ask questions. Every single person we asked, spoke to or just bonded with were super friendly and approachable.

  • DON'T be startled by the amount of cats walking on the street. They're harmless and apparently they're a very normal part of daily life.

  • DO get a hotel/place to stay around the middle of everything. As said earlier, you'll be walking. a lot and to have the hotel in the middle of everything was amazing. We stayed at BLEND ATHENS HOTEL and they were amazing!

If you're a history nerd (like myself):

  • DO visit as many historical sites as you can. We went to Athens and Aegina and they are known for their historical sites, museums and art. Get a map and get ready to walk A LOT. Bring water or money for water.

  • DO book tickets online prior. The lines (like any tourist spots) can get pretty long and waiting in a hot sun isn't the greatest.

  • DO visit the Athens National Gardens, the scenery is stunning!

On food:

  • DO eat as much as you can (does this one need an explanation?!) The food, olive oil, cheese, meat, drinks were all outstanding and compared to other places pretty inexpensive.

  • DO try the feta cheese, Greek yogurt, honey, olive oil and traditional Greek foods, they're incomparable to the ones I've been eating my entire life.

  • DO ask locals or even those at your hotel/Air BnB what places they'd recommend and go!

  • DO drink as much coffee as you can. The coffee is strong, robust and delicious.

  • DON'T asked for "iced" anything. Say "Freddo" instead.

  • DO try the seafood when traveling to a smaller island. Aegina is known for their fresh seafood and it was outstanding.

I will definitely be heading back to Greece in the future to absorb its rich culture, history, amazing food and scenery. Do you have any travel dos and don'ts that I forgot to add? Let me know and see below for a gallery of Grecian food, sites and history!
