For my entire life, I've been a homebody and I'm always set in the notion that one's home should be a safe place, a sanctuary, a place where you go to shut off the world, the hustle, the hardships, the everyday grind; and now since we've collectively endured a (pandemic) and life is forever changed (for a lot of us, our homes also became our workplace) it is integral to have a place that brings you back to you. Somewhere you can reset and relax because you deserve it.
Over the years, I've learned many tips and tricks that ensure every time I walk into my home that it is peaceful and whether you live alone, with people, work from home or don't these suggestions may help you too into making your space a home!
It should be noted that one should do these tips in addition to a calming body, skin, self care routine in order to have the complete experience!
Let's start with the obvious- declutter and organize! It may seem so simple but when life is coming at us in every direction and all we want to do when we're home is sleep, the cluttering and organization can drastically affect us without realizing. Take 15 mins everyday to clear any clothes that are around, clean any dishes, wipe down surfaces, sweep and re-organize anything that may be out of place (trust me, these 15 mins make a huge difference).
Fun fact- your bed is usually the biggest thing in your room and if its messy, it gives off the feeling that the entire room is messy (even if it isn't). Make your bed and even before that, have a great bed set. Our beds are where we go to reset our bodies and to rest if you aren't 100% comfortable or happy with you bedding, that can also take a toll on you. If you can, invest in some new sheets, a fluffy comforter, some great pillows- whatever it takes. And make your bed! This simple thing alters my feeling when I walk into my bedroom everyday (feels like I have some parts of my life organized haha).
Candles, Diffusers, Room Sprays Oh My!- Aromatherapy is so real and so necessary for relaxation, mental health and emotional wellbeing. Have you ever gotten a whiff of a scent you haven't smelled in years and it transports you back to a time in your life? Exactly! Similarly when you associate a smell with peace and calmness it puts your brain into that state of mind almost immediately. It is a form of psychosomatic conditioning but it works. Find a few scents that you love (feel free to switch it up) and whether through candles- a personal favorite as it sets an ambiance- essential oil diffusers, sprays or more let those scents envelope your space and overtime it will be associated with your safe place.
Mood lighting- I'll be honest, unless it's natural light, I absolutely hate light. I'm not sure why but I always have and everyone close to me makes fun of me for it. Unless really necessary I do not have overhead lights on. I find that it's so much more peaceful to instead have soft lights around rather than one blaring light overhead. During the day, absorb natural sunlight, open your curtains and let sunlight bathe your space and you (it is scientifically proven that sunlight is necessary for our health and happiness- get your source of vitamin D!). However when nighttime comes around and you are getting into a relaxed state of mind candles, lamps and fairy lights can create a beautiful ambiance. Personally, I love candlelight but I also love my himalayan salt lamp and the soft orange-pink glow it gives off. Find a soft light source that you like and use it-it will completely alter your night time atmosphere.
These are just some of my peaceful tips to make your home into your safe place. Do you have any tips that I should try? Let me know in the comments!
