​It’s been the only constant in my life 

Even when you promised to never let go 

Or when he promised me the world and then some 

Or when she said “forever” until we were old and grey 

The only thing that has stuck is the one thing whose very definition is the antithesis of “sameness” 

Ironic

The one thing you didn’t promise is the only thing you’ve committed to

It’s the only thing they’ve stuck to

It’s the only thing that has never truly left me 

Yet I’m never comfortable with it

When I get too comfortable, it hits again 

I’d compare it to the effects of abuse 

Many call it the essence of life

The one thing we can all count on
